Fleeting

2024
Acrylic on canvas and canvas-finished birch panel

I am continuously reminded of the fleeting nature of life. This can offer a helpful awareness during challenging seasons, a reminder that they won’t last forever; and for me, it can interrupt a beautiful season by creating a sense of anticipatory grief knowing it, too, shall pass.

When I’m experiencing moments of joy and freedom, I notice I start to get grippy — I don’t want them to end! And when I’m experiencing moments of discomfort, I notice an impatience arise for them to pass.

What I find confounding is how overtaking pain, elation, or solace can feel in the present moment; but after the moment passes, that charge becomes nothing more than a memory, opening space for whatever is here now.

In this series I wanted to use color capture the fading of that initial intensity. A reminder that all states of being — whether shimmer or gloom —  are fleeting.
